Consumer movement representatives participated in the biggest Civil Society forum in Latvia

On 31 October, in the frame of the European Year of Citizens 2013, the Civil Society forum "Civil participation in Latvia and Europe" took place in Riga. The forum aimed to promote the active use of citizens' rights to strengthen the European Union. In the first part of the forum, various organisations and institutions representatives inspired participants to take action to strengthen health, as well as to create a broader understanding of cultural, educational and prosperity promotion. After this, the forum participants were divided into four working groups to exchange ideas about key theme, including most challenging issues for European Union consumers. It was been stated that Electricity, Gas and District Heat will be one of the most challenging issues for the consumers due to the upcoming Electricity market liberalization. Participants of the working group raised concerns at the municipality level such as wrongly calculate district heat billing information; how to deal with debtors in the multifamily houses; energy efficiency, etc. A total of 180 people including consumer movement representatives from Latvia participated and discussed these European citizenship issues in this forum, which was supported by the European Commission Representation in Latvia.
